Can the Chinese Box Office Make Pacific Rim 2 Happen?

Now that the Chinese have coughed up their share of Hollywood's profits, cinema geeks are wondering if the profits reaped by surprise overseas hit Pacific Rim might be enough to warrant a sequel.

Pacific Rim has officially earned a tidy $100 million at the box office in China. This is around $2 million more than it grossed in the United States. Many folks believed that the sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s big-budget creature feature was hinged on the film’s performance overseas. In fact, some analysts felt that Pacific Rim needed to earn quite a bit of money in China before the studio would even discuss a follow-up.

The movie made more money in China than in the US, indeed it ranks as the best performing foreign movie of all time, beating out competition from the likes of Micheal Bay and action movie maestro Shane Black.  Pundits have pointed out that the Jack Reacher sequel is being considered on the strength of it's overseas receipts alone, where it pulled in $124m compared to it's domestic takings of a paltry $79m.
